Steeped in Culture

Quebec is a province steeped in culture and history.

As the largest French speaking enclave in North America, Quebec has developed a way of life that is unique on the continent. Most of Quebec's population speaks French as their first language.

Quebec is bounded by Ontario, New Brunswick, Labrador and, to the south, four American states (Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, and New York). It is Canada's largest province, boasting 1 450 680 square kilometers of forest, mineral rich earth and bustling urban centres.

Climate in the southern regions of Quebec varies greatly by season. Quebec City averages 11 degrees Celsius in July and dips to -11 degrees in January. About 120 inches of snow falls every winter in this region. Temperatures are much colder in the north. At Inoucdjouac (Port-Harrison) the average January day is -25 degrees Celsius and climbs to 9 degrees in July.

Mining, hydroelectric power, and forestry are the mainstays of Quebec's economy. The province holds one of the world's largest reserves of copper, gold, zinc, iron, and asbestos.

The bulk of Quebec's population is concentrated in the cities and towns along the Saint Lawrence River seaway (a busy shipping route from the Atlantic Ocean to the Great Lakes).

Montreal is the world's second largest French-speaking city and Canada's second largest urban centre. Montreal is Quebec's financial and cultural hub. Many national and multi-national companies are headquartered in downtown skyscrapers. Montreal is home to countless museums, theatres and festivals, including the Just For Laughs international comedy festival held every summer.

Quebec City, the provincial capital, offers a glimpse into the past with its picturesque cobblestone streets, fortified walls, and centuries-old stone buildings.

Quebec offers a myriad of festivals, museums and nightlife. The Quebec Winter Carnival is a popular draw every winter. Artists from around the world sculpt massive ice sculptures as part of the nearly three week long event. The Canadian Museum of Civilization is a popular destination, as is National Battlefields Park.
